THE CHALLENGE
The Granary is heralded as a local landmark reborn. From it’s impeccable canal-side location, this Grade II listed warehouse boasts a proud history dating back to the 18th Century. It has witnessed the ebb and flow of history for almost 250 years and is perfectly positioned for the city’s next chapter. The aim of the works from August 2022 to February 2023 was to create a stunning workspace environment which combines the existing character with modern, high-quality design and finish.
THE APPROACH
The Prostyle Satin Brass finish selected for the Granary Building both compliments the dark wood of the doors and is an ode to the history embedded in the very walls of The Granary. Our Prostyle Knurled range was chosen for many of the lever handles and pull handles, bringing a subtle texture to the otherwise smooth and polished feel of materials chosen throughout.
On this job we also supplied the window hardware. This means the shade of brass was perfectly matched to all of the other ironmongery on the job causing a seamless approach throughout the building.

THE BUILDING
It is thought to have been built in around 1776 as a warehouse for the Leeds & Liverpool Canal Company, it stands proudly by Lock No.1 (the ”River Lock”) of the canal.
The Granary is regarded as an important survival from the extensive range of buildings at the end of the Leeds and Liverpool Canal at its junction with the River Aire and close to the boundary of the Aire and Calder Navigation.
The building was designed by Robert Owen, engineer for the canal company, and was unusual in that a branch of the canal ran into the building allowing loading of barges under cover.
